FROM SPES TO CORPORATE SUCCESS: INSPIRING CAREER JOURNEY OF A BATANGUENO SPES BENEFICIARY

Twenty-two-year-old Ms. Deborah John A. Reocasa, fondly known as Debbie, from Darasa, Tanauan City, Batangas, stands as a testament to the life-changing impact of the Department of Labor and Employment's Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES). 

Participating in the program from June 2022 to June 2025, Debbie emerged as an exemplary achiever whose academic excellence, professional competence, and service record reflect the true spirit of the youth employability initiative. 

A distinguished graduate of Batangas State University, Debbie earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Major in Financial Management, with latin honors as a Magna Cum Laude. 

Her academic journey is further highlighted by the following merits and awards; Certified Bookkeeper, Chartered Financial Management Analyst, Top 10 Laurelian Student Leader Awardee, Service Awardee and Loyalty Awardee.

But prior to these successes, Debbie’s story maps challenges that drive her to  balance her education and financial responsibilities.

Recalling the challenges she faced prior to availing the program, “Before joining the SPES program, I was looking for opportunities to gain work experience while earning enough to help fund my college expenses. As a student, it was difficult to balance my financial needs with my studies, so I wanted a program that would allow me to become more independent without sacrificing my education,” Debbie shared.

Beyond the structural support provided by the agency, the enduring impact of the program is best reflected in the personal success stories of the youth it aims to uplift. Word-of-mouth recommendations from successful alumni have become a powerful testament to the initiative's real-world value, inspiring a new wave of driven students to step forward. Sharing how she discovered the opportunity, she stated: “I first learned about the SPES program through an acquaintance who had previously participated and shared their positive experience. After learning more about its benefits, I became interested because it offered both financial assistance and valuable work experience for students.” 

Driven by a strong sense of independence and a desire to support her family, she took the initiative to apply, which prompted her direct application to the SPES program, “I decided to participate because I wanted to ease the financial burden of my education while gaining practical experience in a professional work environment. I believed that the opportunity would help me prepare for my future career and develop skills that I could use even after graduation.” she noted

Throughout her time as a SPES beneficiary, Debbie showcased high adaptability and a deep commitment to service across various administrative and corporate roles. 

Her SPES journey included her deployments during the summers of 2022 and 2023 at the City Government of Tanauan – Tanauan City College, where she served as Admin Assistant I, assisting in early enrollment processes, registrar’s office operations, and student profiling to ensure admission eligibility. In the summer of 2024, she worked as a Service Crew member at Golden Archers Development Corp. (McDonald’s), performing lobby and public area duties. 

Finally, during the summer of 2025, she returned to the City Government of Tanauan at the Office of the City Agriculturist, where she served as Admin Assistant I, assisting in the documentation of farmers’ status, sorting and encoding seedlings, filing reports, and supporting agricultural programs through essential administrative tasks.

Describing her learnings  across these deployments “I was fortunate to participate in the SPES program from 2022 to 2025 and was assigned to different workplaces each year. Each assignment allowed me to experience different work environments and broaden my understanding of workplace responsibilities,” she shared.

According to Debbie, the program shaped her professional foundation while directly answering her financial needs. 

“The financial assistance I received through SPES significantly helped me pay for my educational expenses, including school supplies, transportation, and other daily needs. More importantly, the work experience gave me practical skills and confidence that I could not have gained inside the classroom alone, making me better prepared for future employment,” she recalled.

The hands-on immersion proved to be a fertile ground for character building and professional growth, moving well beyond routine workplace tasks. For the beneficiaries, the daily office operations quickly transformed into an interactive classroom where theoretical knowledge met actual frontline public service. Reflecting on the specific insights she gained, Debbie shared: “Through the program, I developed strong administrative skills such as document organization, data encoding, records management, filing, communication, and basic office coordination. I also learned the importance of professionalism, responsibility, adaptability, and teamwork. These experiences increased my confidence and helped me realize the value of being organized and dependable, which inspired me to pursue a career involving administrative and office management work.” 

Today, Debbie is applying all her learnings during her SPES experiences into real-world professional success. Employed at WPP Media in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, she serves as a Billing Analyst (also recognized as a Billing Associate). 

“The SPES program gave me valuable work experience that helped me build a strong foundation in administrative work, including document management, data encoding, attention to detail, and professional communication…These experiences made my transition into a Billing Analyst role much smoother, as many of the skills I developed through SPES are directly applicable to my daily responsibilities. More importantly, the program gave me the confidence to pursue career opportunities after graduation, knowing that I already had meaningful workplace experience,” Debbie concluded.
