FROM SUGARCANE TO CORN: DOLE IV-A ADJUSTMENT MEASURES PROGRAM AIDS FORMER SUGARCANE FARMERS IN JUST TRANSITION TO CORN FARMING

In order to aid the affected sugarcane farmers brought by the closure of one of the major sugarcane milling plants in Batangas on their transition to corn farming, the Department of Labor and Employment IV-A through its Batangas Provincial Office released farming supplies to the Calatagan Corn Farmers Association during a ceremonial release held at the Municipal Gymnasium, Calatagan, Batangas, December 9.

In her speech, DOLE Provincial Director Predelma Tan shared the continuous action of the Department in providing support to workers with hopes of stabilizing their source of income by diverting to a new crop through the Adjustment Measures Program (AMP).

 

“Ito pong programa namin na Adjustment Measures Program for Workers and Enterprises ay isang convergence program. Ang amin po ay suporta. Nagkakaroon po tayo ng pagtatagpo ng aming services kung saan makakadagdag po kami. Sa DOLE Adjustment Measures program, ang amin pong goal ay to preserve employment dahil sa epekto ng pagsasara ng CADPI,  ang laki ng naging epekto especially sa sugarcane farmers,” she shared.

 

Furthermore, she emphasized that collaboration with other stakeholders helped the Department provide holistic assistance to the affected workers.

With utmost appreciation, the Calatagan Corn Farmers Association through its President, Mr. Antonio Rivera Jr. expressed their gratitude for the Department’s effort in assisting them as they face the challenges brought about by the closing of one of the major sugarcane milling plants in Batangas.


“Maraming salamat po sa DOLE [dahil] nakatulong po dito sa corn farmes dito sa Calatagan. Na-appreciate namin ‘yung ginawa ninyo, ‘yung pagod n’yo at pagtulong ninyo sa amin. Maraming salamat,” Rivera remarked.


A total of 35 beneficiaries received the farming supplies comprised of fertilizers, garden hoes, shovels, nets, and hoses amounting to a total of more than P500,000.00.

As part of its convergence strategy in making the just transition possible, the Department conducted coordination meetings with different government offices primarily the Department of Agriculture, local government units, farmers' organizations, and private stakeholders to ensure that the program will have success until the marketing of products of the farmers.


During the ceremony, the Calatagan Corn Farmers Association and the DOLE forged the Memorandum of Agreement and the Deed of Donation to formalize the turnover.

The Department collaborated with the local government unit of Calatagan for the realization of the turnover ceremony.
